OUR STORY

The original ride was organised through the Lamplighters, a community support group for the Health Service. Mr Jackson said Mary had ridden in the early 1990s in the Murray to Moyne, a long running fundraising event from the Murray River to Moyne on the south west coast of Victoria.

“When Mary came back from that she thought we could do something the same that would raise funds for our Hospital rather than another one” Mr Jackson said. “the bike trail to Lakes Entrance had only recently opened then so we thought that would be a good trip.”

The very first Central Gippsland Health Service Bike Ride commenced in 1993.

The Bike Ride has changed over the many years it has been taking place and the journey evolved to be from Sale to Lake Tyers, after some changes to the trail, although the length has stayed the same; around 185 kilometres on the first day and 165 kilometres on the return strip.  Most people complete the Bike Ride as a relay event, although some hardy souls take part as individual riders.

Mrs Jackson estimates the Bike Ride has raised in excess of $100,000.00 since it first began in 1993 and it has not stopped yet.

The money raised by the Bike Ride has been used to purchase a range of equipment for many areas of the Health Service.

"We enjoyed the absolutely beautiful scenery that the area offers"

"Didn't expect to have such a sore backside, but it was heaps of fun and I will be back next year"

“It is a fantastic experience and it’s for a great cause as the hospital has touched everyone’s lives in some way."
